The Institute for Steel Structures operates a wind tunnel to measure the wind load on buildings or building parts.

The wind tunnel can be used as a boundary layer wind tunnel to simulate the natural wind flow on the earth’s surface. With special turbulence turbines and different surface settings it is possible to simulate realistic wind currents, regarding the speed profile which features height, gustiness and a turbulence spectrum.

Furthermore simulations on building parts such as bridge sections with smooth currents or homogeneous turbulences are possible. The models can either be attached fixed or suspended depending on if the aerodynamic or aeroelastic force coefficients should be measured.
